I offer a repair programme for failed Skoda Superb “Canton” option factory subwoofers.
Typically it is the tinsel leads, the voice coil is perfectly fine. Replacing them is tricky because a new factory OEM part will fail after 6 months with snapped tinsel leads (it’s still a problem on 2023 manufactured parts), used units are likely on borrowed time but will fail much quicker. The driver is an odd trapezoid size so it’s not really possible to fit a different driver in the original sub box, particularly one with the same parameters. The driver is extremely powerful for what it is and it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what causes the leads to snap with how much excursion it has.
Really Skoda should have recalled these as they will all fail at some point, it’s not a case of if – it’s a case of when!
If you are interested in a repair that will last, that will be cheaper than a new part, please email [email protected] – I only need the driver rather than the sub box. I have had great success on postal repairs of these units. The repair process involves fully replacing the tinsel leads with much higher quality parts and extending them slightly to allow full excursion of the driver, but prevent them from “slapping” the cone or basket and any short circuits. Before the tinsel leads are replaced, I confirm if the voice coil is in full working order which ultimately confirms if the unit is repairable – 9 times out of 10, they will be. I have not seen one with a failed voice coil yet.
